Interview with Artist Connie Haley

Are you one of the many quilters that play with mixed media art? Do you like fabric dyes, painting and layering paper on fabric? If so, it’s time to go shopping, Connie has created your new favorite fabrics for 3 Wishes Fabric!  Let’s get to know her better, artist to artist.

Connie, where did you find the inspiration for “Good Dog”? There are twelve dogs, each with a different personality in the panel. How did you do it?

Connie:  I started by using dogs I know. My own Great Dane is in the “Play Ball” panel. Every day she brings be her ball absolutely covered in slobber, which she expects me to pick up and throw for her. Of course, I do it! Some of the other dogs belong to friends, and some others are inspired by photos. I wanted to represent many of the most popular breeds so people could find their own dog in this collection.

Where do you look for inspiration?
Connie:  I look for inspiration everywhere. I recently took a trip to Buenos Aires, which I found incredibly vibrant and colorful. There was something interesting around every corner, and I took lots of pictures of the architecture there, which I am going to incorporate into my next series. They call it the Paris of South America, so my next look will probably have a Paris vibe, but certainly not in the traditional sense.

Do you have any advice to choose and mix colors?
Connie:  I don’t adhere to any rules about color! I mix all colors, all the time. My process is to try different looks until I find one I like. Lay things out, stand back and look at it, stand way back and look at it again, change some things around and look again, until you know in your heart it’s right.

Your art is multi-layered, mixing texture and color. Are you surprised to see the excitement that quilters and sewists have when they see your fabric designs?
Connie:  It makes me very happy that quilters are excited about my designs. I hope my fabrics make their creations positively dazzling! Most of my designs are originally created for greeting cards or wall decor, so fabric and quilting is a special added bonus for me. I love it when people send me photos of projects they have completed using my fabrics.

One of the common problems of artists and quilters is how to find the time to create and be productive. Any hints to share?
Connie:  As an artist, I am very fortunate to be able to do this as a full-time job. My studio is very busy and I love that. I know that creativity feeds my soul, and if I had a different job I would still create art in my free time. It makes me happy. Make time for what makes you happy. As for my hints to share: keep trying new things. Try different mediums, different techniques, whatever. It will keep you interested and inspired!

Thank you Connie for inspiring our audience!
