Land of Whimzie Baby Mittens

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow … so many of you are already snow covered. I hope you were ready with some projects and fabric!

Here’s a quick baby mitten project to keep on hand [!!] for gifts or an unexpected chilly day. They’ll make great mitts for protecting baby fingernails, too. Land of Whimzie flannels are wonderfully soft and come in cute prints. You’ll need two 7” squares, a small safety pin and some ¼” stretch elastic- only 4” for each one.  Adjust the size larger if you need to.

Put the squares right sides together and cut in half (3 ½” x 7” pieces). To make a pattern, round all four corners and cut out.

Sew around, using a backstitch at the beginning and end, or sew ‘off’ to the side like I did, to make an opening in one side. If you place the opening in the center, it becomes the elastic opening, too. Trim the seams around the curves to 1/8”.

Turn right side out through the opening, and push half, which is now the lining, into the mitten.

To make the casing for the elastic, sew around ½” from the opening.  If your opening isn’t in the casing, use a seam ripper to pull out the two or three stitches. Use a safety pin to pull the elastic into the casing. Sew the ends of the elastic with a few small stitches.
