Use Your Scraps…Save the Earth!
Earth Day – April 22nd
We made this Fabric Scrap Bowl with a 1/2 lb. scrap pack we found at our local Michael’s for only $8.99. It’s an easy and carefree project. Find the full instructions here.
Most quilters and sewists have a basket of fabric scraps, but who can resist the curiosity of a scrap pack? For this project, the variety was perfect – mediums, lights and darks that would give pops of color here and there. You’ll need cotton clothesline, scraps, thread, a glue stick and sewing machine.
The clothesline rope was left natural in a good bit of the design, but you have enough fabric in the bag to cover the entire 100 feet. This bowl will be used on a table with burlap and tin, so I went rustic. For a baby’s room or kitchen, a colorful fully-wrapped version would be super cute.
Scrap Bowl Mini-Tutorial & Tips
First thing I did was open the 100 foot clothesline and realized… yep, there was a twisted, snarled mess. So take a minute to roll yourself a rope ball.
Next, read through the instructions. Cut plenty of strips about 3/4″ wide. Use everything, keep it randomly scrappy. If you have a favorite fabric, cut more of them to work in to the bowl. Start by wrapping the end, using a little glue stick to hold the fabric in place. Spiral the wrapped rope into a coil in a clockwise direction like the photo. Trust me, this is important. Start your zigzag stitching in the center …. and keep sewing, coiling, wrapping, sewing!
When it’s time to shape the sides, tilt the bowl and keep stitching. [This is the point where you may realize you did not start your spiral clockwise.]
Keep wrapping and zigzagging until you have an awesome, scrappy bowl. Make one! The instructions are free and on our website. Use your scraps!
