St. Patty’s Table Runner
Today we’re sharing a quick & easy quilted table runner!
Here’s an idea to use some of your favorite green fabrics for your St. Patrick’s day table. We’re going to play with green fat quarters from your stash – you’ll need about about 10 to 20 for a 50″ runner. For color inspiration, think about lucky shamrock green and spring-time fresh green. Look for tone-on-tones, but be sure to pick a few solids for a trendy look. For fun, I added whimsical dots. Gather up your favorite greens and let’s get started!
You’ll be cutting two strips from each color. They should play well together, but not be too matchy. For the backing and binding, we have a 100% cotton two-yard precut at AC Moore in the perfect St. Pat’s green. Use a 14″ x 55″ backing and cut of batting, which you may have saved from trimming another quilt. Cotton or poly quilt batting, low loft or fusible would be perfect.
Cutting: 2 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ Two of each color for a total of 25 pieces were used in the sample. Tip: Using a 12 1/2″ long ruler makes cutting so much easier – you don’t have to hunt for the numbers, just cut around 3 sides!
Layout the design: Arrange randomly or thoughtfully, working in pairs from the center out. You are the designer, so work in your comfort zone. Add more of your favorites or feel free to remove anything you aren’t sure of.
Sewing: Sew in pairs. Chain piecing is super-quick. This gives you another chance to admire your combinations – you have a beautiful collection of greens! Sewing will take only a few minutes…
Press the seams open so your quilting will finish smoothly, especially if you like to free-motion quilt. Finally, sew the pairs together.
Finishing: Layer the backing, batting and pieced top and baste together. Use a walking foot and [you guessed it] green thread. Simple lines following the piecing seams are needed to hold the seams together, and any extra thread lines you quilt will be oh so artful. Add plenty of little matchstick lines if you have time! Trim the sides even and bind. Quick and super fun!
